Abstract: Every woman has been a sucker for the perfect body shape that fits into her dream dress. Myths and stories are not just born out of urban or ghost sagas, various myths have been associated with corseting too that have been derived from the Victorian era or sham artists. 


ARE CORSETS BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH? FACTS AND MYTHS

It is often observed that historical clothing has been a subject of misconception and fables. The foremost Victorian fashion trend which intrigues modern society is Corsets. There has been gossip going around for decades that many women have surgically removed their lower ribs and supplanted their organs to accomplish smaller waists. It is also heard that corsets are believed to be a historical symbol of female oppression. But let us ask ourselves in contemporary times, is it a symbol of the oppression of women? Are we to be blamed for the health issues or the corsets? 

There are simply so many such buzzes and myths associated with corsets that have been doing rounds and we acknowledge everything we listen to before knowing the fact. Let us clear some myths and facts corresponding to corsets. 

 

  • Myth 1- Teeny waist- Part of this myth comes from Hollywood movies where we see a young woman heroically grabbing the bedpost while being laced into her corset. But, like with most precarious intentions today, these women were in the minority. Most women wore their corsets with moderation and good sense. 

     

    Fact check - There are thousands of corsets that have been conserved by showrooms and designers, as well as there are advertisements from the archive and ladies' magazines. Having a glance over these corsets, we can notice what sizes were common. But, we may raise a question that doesn’t antique corsets prove how slim these women were? Not at all. It’s a delusion that a corset laces are locked in the back, edge to edge. A corset is devised to have a rational aperture between the back edges, about 2 to 6 inches. Now, if we add that amount to the waist stature of a corset integrated with the “squish factor”, or how much body fat is consolidated when the corset is put on, we begin to fetch a healthier perspective on the size. 

  • Myth 2- Wearing corsets can help lose weight-   Wouldn’t it be so great if losing the weight would have been so simple? Unfortunately, it is a myth that presumably arrives from a general misapprehension of the term ‘waist training’.

    Fact check- A waist trainer in this connotation is merely a body cincher. We wear it to make our waist look a little slimmer. When we take it off, we come right back to standard. It does not magically cast off fat from our bodies.

  • Myth 3- Corsets are meant to be worn for fulfilling aesthetic purposes only- Corsets are considered to be worn for fashion purposes only. Corsets are interchangeable with the ‘hourglass figurine’, precisely created to attract the wearer in at the midriff to emphasize the hips and bust.

    Fact check – Many people are unaware of the fact that corsets and corset tops can even be utilized for medical pursuits too. This is usually in the structure of a spinal prop, commonly employed to deal with lower back pain. Just like their fashionable look-alikes, these props are constricted using laces at the back and the sides to improve poise.

    BENEFITS OF WEARING A CORSET 

    For many years, corsets have been a defining element of European fashion has now filled in the globe and spread worldwide for the hourglass figure it hands over. But it is not bound for aesthetic pleasure only, corsets have medical benefits too. 

    • Corsets can prevent asymmetries and assist us in averting anxiety or wounds associated with skeletal asymmetries and muscular asymmetries. 
    • Corsets are utilized as lumbar help to prevent possible back injuries and provide aid during work hours.
    • Corsets provide women with an hourglass silhouette that they may never be competent to achieve otherwise. The usage of corsets can make it feasible for women to temporarily experience an hourglass shape even if their existing gene indication or health condition dictates otherwise
    • For people with constipation problems, the stress of wearing a corset can sometimes stimulate the intestines and may permit a brief expansion in peristalsis immediately after taking off the corsets, making it easier to have a bowel movement. 
    • Corsets help to ease back pain. 
    • It provides bust support. 
    • Improves overall body posture. It pressures us to straighten our back and squeezes our body to be placed perfectly straight. 

    Hence, what we have heard about corsets from stories or movies is not necessarily true and applied to every brand that makes corsets. There are so many brands that have taken into the flaws of ancient models of corsets and made modern reservations about them which make them suitable for everyone to wear.
